Before The Battle At The Polls … A Presidential Food Fight

In celebration of Election Day, We The Eaters is dedicating November to a new series, “Historical Foods: A Presidential Perspective.” We’ll work our way backwards, starting with recent history, bringing you comfort foods of — or inspired by — Jimmy Carter, Teddy Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.

But before you cast your vote on November 6, let your belly do the choosing as we pit the current candidates against each other. Does chili reminiscent of President Obama’s family recipe make your mouth water? Or is it opponent Mitt Romney’s fave — meatloaf — that you crave?

Stone Soup Throw Down — Commence Casting!

This week, Sarah defends her title against challenger April in a heated lunchtime battle. It’s stone soup — the concept based on the folk story where members of a community all contribute to a common meal.

Think of those spare ingredients from a recent dinner or the plethora of extra veggies from your garden. On their own, kind of plain jane.  But combined with your friends’ or co-workers’, you just might come up with something yummy for lunch.

Which community’s efforts got it right? Read on and decide for yourselves.  Then, as in our last Food Fight, check out our Facebook page and vote!

Get Ready To Rumble — It’s A Food Fight!

In this week’s challenge, Sarah and Amy go head-to-head in a little mano y mano combat over grilled sides. Why, you ask? Because meat doesn’t own the grill anymore (vegetarians, vegans and just plain veggie-lovers rejoice!).

From grilled french toast and artichoke hearts to whole ears of corn (even pound cake, believe it or not), you can make an entire meal over hot coals — or propane, as the case may be. And we’re pretty sure you’ll find something here to make your mouth water.

So read on and see what we’re serving up for grilled sides — with a side of smack talk! Then, try the recipes on for size and head to our Facebook page … because you, dear Eater, will decide who wins this week’s food competition. Game on!
